THERE have been further concerns about the pollution in Camelford, following reports of waste in the town’s river.
A local man was walking from Enfield Park on Monday, February 27, when he came across polluted water in the River Camel, which runs directly through the town.
This was found near the Four Seasons café, which is situated just above part of the river, and the gentleman had suspicions that it had come from a nearby building site.
However, Camelford Town Council’s administrator, Amanda Musgrave, made contact with the builders of the site along College Road, IXER Construction, who are currently building six four-bedroom residential dwellings.
The builders’ senior construction manager, Scott Williams, had told Ms Musgrave that unfortunately, their silt trap system had become full, which had caused the waste to pour into the river.
He told Amanda: “Our silt trap system has become full; we are dealing with this problem as I am typing this, along with looking at other methods to avoid this again.”
Ms Musgrave has also made contact with the Environment Agency, who are now investigating the issue.
A spokesperson for the Environment Agency told the Post: “We received reports at the end of last month, after some heavy rain, of dirty water running off a building site, through the surface water drains and into the River Camel.
“We contacted the site manager on the construction site, who confirmed they had stopped all large machinery movements and were using pumps to manage the run off, while they put in extra silt traps.”
