FORTY-EIGHT vehicles were stopped as part of an operation in Hallworthy, run by the police, in conjunction with Cornwall Council Trading Standards, Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency and the Benefits Agency. The operation on May 15 ran for four hours, during which police seized one vehicle, which was found to be using red diesel, and issued prohibition notices to two vehicles found to be in a dangerous or unroadworthy condition. Nine other offences were dealt with by process report and a number of minor offences were dealt with by words of advice. In addition, Animal Health and Trading Standards inspected 26 livestock vehicles and their contents, and issued advice in four cases regarding tagging issues and one warning letter regarding an unclean trailer. Launceston Neighbourhood Beat Manager Johnny Haynes, who organised the operation, said: "The operation was designed to improve road safety and welfare of animals. Only the more serious offences were dealt with formally, as we would rather work with people to bring the standard up."
