BUDE Police are warning local residents about doorstep traders after they received a number of calls in recent weeks.
Reports claimed that the traders were enquiring about tarmacing work on the residents’ properties, and when challenged, regarding verifying their identity they quickly left the scene.
Police have advised residents not to have any work carried out by ‘cold callers’ as the risks are high and prices could be excessive, often ending up costing more than first agreed and it may not be of a high quality standard.
There are operations in place across the country to disrupt rogue trading criminals and to raise public awareness of doorstep crime.
Bude Police shared a number of the key points from the campaign:
• Most reputable traders will have a string of good references that they would be happy to share with a prospective client.
If a trader is not able to supply you with a single positive recommendation from a former client, this should be a major cause of concern.
• A distraction burglar is someone who gains access to your property by distracting or tricking their way in to steal cash or valuables.
The key point is, if you’re not sure, don’t open the door.
• A rogue trader is a criminal who will take advantage of householders by using high-pressure, forceful sales techniques.
Don’t feel pressured — if you suspect a rogue trader is at your door then call 999. If you’re unsure, don’t open the door!
• Operation Rogue Trader has been running successfully for a number of years and gives police forces an opportunity to target those who prey on the most vulnerable in society.
Anyone with information regarding possible rogue traders is asked to contact police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
