THE man responsible for much of the musical content of TV series Poldark attended a community event at Tregadillett on Saturday.
The United Church held the successful event in the church and community hall.
Its initial attraction was that few people had any idea of what to expect. It started with a Cornish tea, with pasties and a wide variety of crumbles and of course, cream.
Cornwall was the theme for the whole evening, so instead of flowers on the tables, they were decorated with St Piran flags, serviettes were black and gold as were many decorations.
The patrons were invited to come wearing traditional Cornish colours, and many did. Church members were suitably dressed in Poldark period costume, which added to the scene, as they served customers.
The evening performance started almost in darkness as ‘Ross’ and ‘Demelza’ dramatically entered. They were played by Terry Jones and Sarah Vinson, both suitably attired, especially ‘Demelza’ with her red hair.
The stars of the evening were Mike O’Connor and Barbara Griggs — Mike has composed some of the music for the series, and is responsible for much of its musical content.
Together they told of the filming of the series, with an accomplished dialogue about the actors and actresses and, of course, the unique Cornish scenery — and then there was music. With violins, accordion and Barbara`s wonderful harp, and song, it all added to the performance.
On the set, instead of the iconic chimney stack set against the sea, an old wooden cross, decorated with poppies seemed to be just right. The symbols of the scythe, and other suitable items were much in evidence.
Financially, it was a success. At the performance`s conclusion, as well as the well deserved presents to Mike and Barbara, a cheque was presented to the Friends of Laneast Church, who staged the original performance there last summer.
