THE Cornish Tractor Club’s Eastern Area annual ploughing match was held on Saturday (April 30) at Tilly Park Farm, Laneast by kind invitation of Mr and Mrs Martin Orchard and family.
Ploughmen from all over the South West competed in fine weather for top places.
A display of vintage working engines and Shire horse ploughing also featured and provided a good show for the general public who attended.
It was a poignant crowd that assembled for the presentation of trophies before which a speech was given by spokesperson, Andrew Medland, who reminisced on the lives and support given to the club by its recent late members, John Tryner, Leon Vanstone, Clifford Orchard and Peter Lobb.
A minute silence was observed. Their presence this year was sadly missed.
Match champion on the day was Mark Williams from St Columb.
A new trophy was also donated by the late John Tryner’s family and presented to the most senior ploughman by John’s grandaughter.
Mr Medland then conducted a large prize draw followed by an auction of tools and motoring accessories, generously donated by Vanstone’s Garage and their many trade suppliers.
On the following day, Sunday, May 1, the tractor club’s working event continued with a further auction of motoring accessories held later in the afternoon.
Following the auction, a tractor road-run was held visiting local villages including the North Petherwin area in memory of Mr Leon Vanstone.
Approximately 30 tractors took part, including those owned by the late Mr Vanstone, driven by his sons, friends and members from the Nuffield Leyland Tractor Club, with support from Gloucester, in memory of Leon, a former member and friend.
Proceeds from the weekend amounted to more than £1,200 and will be donated to the British Heart Foundation and Cancer Research.
The Tractor Club Eastern Area expressed its thank to all its many supporters and helpers.
