Holsworthy people were 'over the moon' about the third Community Fun Day held at the Holsworthy Community College last Thursday evening.

The theme chosen for this year's event, which was organised jointly by the local police and the community college, was the Space Age.

Two large inflatable domes acted as planetaria in which state of the art equipment projected images on the inner surface totally surrounding the audiences.

In one they were treated to a simulation of the night skies with close-ups of the moon and planets, in another a film entitled 'The Dawn of the Space Age' began with the launch of Sputnik and featured Russian space achievements as well as the American Gemini, Apollo and Shuttle programs.

It included the first moon landing and ended with a visit to the International Space Station. All agreed it was a thrilling experience. The space theme was continued in a number of activities and competitions such as Space Hopper races, rocket launching alien face painting and a fancy dress competition.

The more serious aim of the fun day was represented by the presence of more than 30 local agencies there to explain the services and activities they can offer and in some cases to recruit volunteers.

PC Amanda Brown said she was delighted so many people had come and that they seemed to have enjoyed themselves. She explained that a genuine astronaut from NASA had been invited to attend but at the last moment was unable to come.

They would, however, apply again and were hopeful that one would visit Holsworthy next spring on an educational visit involving the schools and at a special event in the Memorial Hall.
