THE fifth Pyworthy Village Show was held on Saturday, August 31.
There were a splendid number of entries in most categories, fruit and vegetables were slightly fewer, due to the adverse weather earlier in the year. Carol Beaven won first prize for the heaviest onion and Rob Horton won the longest runner bean for the second year. The standard of all the exhibits was remarkable, showing the diverse talents of all people taking part. The floral displays were imaginative especially Angela Skinner’s display of ‘Rule Britannia’ winning her a first. There were numerous entries for the cookery and preserve category, which included many cakes, scones, biscuits, chutney, sauces, jams. Liffy Lowes won a number of firsts in this section; the judge for this huge display, Vivienne Hale, deserved a medal.
Towards the end of the show for the first time, there was an auction of items donated. What fun, particularly with Martin Brennon at the helm! People were so good with donations, even for the longest runner bean. The highlight of the show was little Soal Brookes, age three, who wanted to auction the beautiful crown that he made, and he also sang a song to the audience on the stage.
The photograph section did not fail to impress. There was numerous entries displayed, which were imaginative and thought provoking.
Everyone had a fun afternoon admiring the exhibits, enjoying a cream tea, chatting to friends and neighbours. All the children presented exceptional items again, showing inspiration and creativity. Caleb Balsdon had worked hard to win the children’s section, successfully winning the cup and rosette. The overall winner of the show was Marion Ravn ‘Congratulations Marion’ and a well-deserved Helen Baker was a close second.
Particular appreciation goes to the team of helpers and judges who gave their time, these dedicated people who help to make the show a success, are equally important especially the ‘early risers’ that stayed all day. Special thanks to the people that supported the show and made donations to maintain the upkeep of Pyworthy Village Hall, a superb sum of £550 was raised.
