DRIVERS are being urged to slow down in Duke Street, St Stephen’s, after a man was knocked down outside his front door.
Michael and Maggie Dawe said their home in the street has suffered frequent damage from vehicles being driven too fast. They said their porch has been hit three times, but things took a more serious turn when Mr Dawe was struck by a car outside their front door.
Mrs Dawe said: “Thankfully, my husband was all right, but it’s only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or killed here. Lots of pedestrians use this street, so car drivers really do need to slow down and show some consideration for others.”
Mrs Dawe contacted her Cornwall Councillor, Liberal Democrat Adam Paynter, to see if anything could be done to encourage drivers to slow down.
Cllr Paynter, who represents Launceston North and North Petherwin, said: “Duke Street is a very narrow road with cars parked down one side and a narrow footway on the other.
“The main issue seems to be that drivers are ignoring the 30mph limit when leaving the long straight road from Egloskerry into St Stephen’s. This means they can end up driving on the footway, which endangers pedestrians and can damage homes.
“I have arranged for a radar camera to record speeds in the area and I am working with our Highways team and the police to see what else we can do to improve the situation.”
