IT was a red letter day in Lezant earlier this month when not just the annual horticultural show took place but also the opening of a new play climber on the Jubilee Field.

An old, beyond repair climbing frame was removed three years ago. When Lezant Parish Council invited applications for a share of a new community fund, local mother Rose Wilton rallied support and applied on behalf of the ‘Lezant Parish Families’. She was awarded £500 and went on to obtain another £500 from Launceston Rotary Club. The Jubilee field doubles up as school playing field for the local primary school, so The Friends of Trekenner School were pleased to pledge another £1,000.

Significant funds were still needed, so the parish aouncil made an application to SITA Trust and was delighted to be awarded £5,700. SITA Trust provides grants through the Landfill Communities Fund. This important source of funding has been available since 1997 and has provided such projects with more than £1.4-billion.

The contractor was Alastair Guy and Sons, of Stoke Climsland, who has designed play areas at the Eden Project, and Crooklets Beach, Bude among many others. Every project is built by hand, from local timbers, using a small team of expert designers and craftsmen, to get a highly bespoke play area of lasting quality and uniqueness.

The climber was opened by Cllr Neil Burden and the ribbon cut by local children. The parish council is delighted with the end result, which is a well built, exciting piece of play equipment, in natural materials which complement the beautiful location it is set in.
