GUESTS from as far as Spain helped a Broadwell couple celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary.
Dennis and Phyllis Davies, who married on May 5 1945 – three days before VE day, sat down to a barbecue alongside 43 friends and family. Some of whom had flown in from Spain, Holland and France especially to see them.
Among their family were two of their three children, seven grandchildren, and great granddaughter.
Dennis, who is 90, and is one of seven siblings – all of whom are still alive – was fortunate to have three of his sisters and brother present.
Their daughter-in-law, Karen Davies said: "Guests came from as far afield as Holland, France and Spain to celebrate this momentous occasion at a party held at Birchamp House, Newland. We all sat down for a barbecue – which is Dennis's favourite way to cook food.
"The Dutch couple and the German friend, who lives in France, originally met Dennis and Phyllis in France, and have since become firm friends. Their grandson, Henry flew from Spain, where he is living and working, to take part. There were no surprises but everyone who attended meant something to the couple.
"Dennis recalled how he met Phyllis when she was seconded from her native Berkshire as a "Timber Jill", a member of the Women's Land Army. He says the secret to their long and happy marriage has been a partnership with a common goal and to be lucky enough to be surrounded by loving family and friends."
