THE Governing Body of Holsworthy Primary School is currently consulting on a proposal to enlarge the school from 280 places to 315 places with effect from September 1, 2009.
Within a consultation booklet, it states: "The net capacity of our school needs to be expanded to create capacity to meet parental preference, and to allow every local pupil a place at their local school.
"The school's current capacity of 280 and admission number of 42 offers little or no flexibility to admit local pupils moving into the area during the year.
"The additional space will be created by the addition of a Foundation Stage Unit which will accommodate the children at the nursery and those in the reception years at the school.
"The additional classroom in the first instance will be used for small group work and specific subjects such as food technology. Staffing will not change initially as the pupil numbers will remain at current levels, but as pupil numbers increase an additional teacher and teaching assistant will be employed."
The Governors say the need to expand is due to the forecast number of pupils arising from new housing development, within the school's designated area; the school's difficulties in accommodating older children moving into the area; the increased population, and the fact that the nearest school is approximately two miles away.
The closing date for responding to the consultation is 5pm on Friday, December 19.
