PLANNING permission is being sought for the extension of the basement on the site of the Manor Inn in Woolsery for the addition of a spa.
This will be part of larger renovations which seek to bring life back into the former hotel.
Woolsery Manor is a Grade II listed building that sits opposite the Farmers Arms pub, which has recently undergone major renovation.
The spa being proposed would include a swimming pool, hydrotherapy pool, sauna, steam room, small gym and treatment rooms.
The design statement explains that the development is at the centre of a wider strategy to help regenerate the businesses within the village and attract tourists to the area ensuring the long term future of both Woolsery and the historic building: “The applicants also own the recently refurbished Farmers Arms pub and adjoining fish and chip shop as well as the village shop which has recently achieved planning permission for additional hotel accommodation within the upper floors.
“The manor and surrounding buildings are a key historic asset within the heart of Woolsery. It is currently in very poor condition and the historic fabric is at risk of further decay.
“This application proposes to repair, conserve and renovate the existing buildings and provide some additional sympathetic structures in order to re-open it as a hotel. This will require significant investment in both time and money but will ultimately provide a sustainable use for the property. This is vital in order to secure the long-term future of the building and to help regenerate the centre of the village.”
It is also hoped this development will provide a number of jobs in the rural community. It is estimated that 35 full time jobs will be made available in shift work to run the 24/7 hotel. The applicant has stated that these employees will be sourced from the local area where possible.
