There had been plenty of talk in the past of a potential new 70 bed hotel being built in Bude, at the site of the former bus depot.

The old bus depot and depository buildings had been demolished and the plot was all but ready to be built on. Plans for a new 70-bed Travelodge had been submitted to Bude-Stratton Town Council and Cornwall Council, however each time it has been rejected due to alterations needed on the build.

The site, which is located at the top of the town, opposite the Broadclose Hill junction, is now applying for an erection of five town houses, ten flats and three commercial A1 Retail/A2 Office Units.

The application is still waiting for approval from Cornwall Council, however one resident has already voiced their concerns regarding the parking spaces. Mrs Catherine Campbell said: “Visuals look good — but it’s in an area of town with little to no parking already.

“Town houses 6 to 8, and 10 have parking on the plans but not 11 to 15 or any of the flats.

“Over the next five years people will also be moving to electric cars. Already 10.5% of all new sales are plug in — researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk/documents/CBP-7480/CBP-7480.pdf — if only on street parking is available (which is already rare there!) then 10 homes will be without the ability to have electric car chargers at home.

“The plans need to be altered to give each home at least one parking space — with spare guest parking available too, off the road, and with the ability to easily put in electric charging in the future.”
