CORNWALL Council planning department has given conditional approval to an application for the siting of a timber-framed cabin to provide an additional classroom, with solar panels and an air source heat pump, at Budehaven Community School in Bude.

The planning officer’s report states that the applicant, Mr Calum White of Budehaven Community School, has sought permission for a sustainable temporary cabin at the school to provide “a space to deliver targeted interventions within the school site, called ‘The Oasis Project’”.

The plan is for a timber-framed cabin measuring 6 metres by 5 metres and height of 2.5m, and with a flat roof, plus an associated wildlife garden area to the north east behind a picket fence. As well as the cabin being built of sustainable materials it is to incorporate other sustainable measures such as rainwater harvesting, solar panels for electricity and an Air Source Heat Pump to provide heating.

The building is to be sited north of the school’s all-weather pitch between two footpaths and adjacent to existing buildings.

The officer notes about the proposed building: “Due to its scale and design it is considered to have acceptable impact upon school and surroundings and accords with the aims and intentions of Policy 12 of the Cornwall Local Plan Strategic Policies 2010-2030.”

As the buildings is at some distance from neighbouring residential properties and it “is therefore considered that the development would not result in undue harm to neighbour amenity through any overbearing relationship, overshadowing, overlooking or the unreasonable generation of noise or disturbance.”

The officer concludes by recommending the plan for approval subject to conditions.

In her Grant of Conditional Planning Permission, Louise Wood, Service Director Planning and Sustainable Development, says that the plans can go ahead provided they are begun within the space of three years and are carried out in accordance with the plans attached to the application ref PA21/02619, and certain details may require council approval before work begins.
