BUDE photographer, Fleur Churchill, has been chasing sunsets at Widemouth Bay for three years.

On the very day Bude once again won the prestigious British Travel Awards gold award, a unique photographic journey along Widemouth Bay was launched.

The very best images have been compiled into a book that is being printed as a limited edition in the first week of December, to be delivered in the second week. It was only available to order until midnight on Tuesday, December 6.

It is a journey that began some three years before, from a place of grief, when Fleur began photographing Cornwall after the passing of her much loved brother.

This place of sorrow soon became transformative, and led to an appreciation of Cornwall that enabled the creation of a unique photographic document.

When the Sun Went Down at Widemouth has recorded the very best sunsets at the wonderful Widemouth Bay.

This is a unique beach, where the line of sight to sunset is clear whatever the time of year, or tide time.

The idea formed early in 2013 to track the change of the year over a long period of time, to record the turning of planets on their axis and the sun tracking from the cliffs of Cambeak on the left, over to Lower Longbeak on the right.

Using no tricks, filters, long exposures or HDR, Fleur likes a natural photo that captures flow, lines and the sheer beauty of the sky and the sand beneath.

The aesthetic is an artistic one, and is a style that says more about the marvel of the world than it does the technique of modern digital photography.

Look carefully, and there are stories to be told — a cauldron of colour brewing on Hallowe’en; the electric blue in the sky when David Bowie passed; surfers saluting the sun; a Stratocaster in the sky; the atmosphere of April, and many more.

Each photo represents that time of the day when people are able to reflect, and look forward.

This is a book to ‘treasure forever’, reminding readers of how beautiful Bude and Widemouth Bay really are and inspiring those to go to the beach, see the sun go down, appreciate the moment and life itself just a little bit more.
