At their monthly luncheon meeting last week, the club had their customary invited speakers from the outside community, who on this occasion were two gentlemen who were members of the Jehovah Witnesses.

Introduced by the Probus Club's speakers secretary, Philip Vanner, the two representatives presented a clear picture of the large and extensive relief and welfare work that the Witnesses carry out worldwide.

Mr. John Joyce and Mr. Steve Brooks each in their turn explained their backgrounds and the part that the faith had, and still has in their lives and how the Jehovah Witnesses that they were part of was represented in 90 countries worldwide and that printing of their monthly 'Watchtower' magazine ran in to 53 million copies each month in 228 languages, while another of their monthly pamphlets dealing with purely secular everyday topics had a print run of 51 million.

In addition to their local meetings each week, they normally have two yearly meetings at each end of the calendar year in Bristol at which over a thousand people attend, while national gatherings at such venues as Wembley Stadium have video links in addition to the capacity attendance.

At the end of their presentation, Mr. John Joyce received questions from the floor and received a vote to thanks from Probus member Ken MacCallum on behalf of the club.

The second club meeting, in the third week of the month, is on April 21, which is often referred to as 'The Hot Seat Meeting' because on this occasion a talk is given voluntarily by a club member. These are usually illustrated with charts, photos, or other illustrative material, and cover a wide variety of subject matter from personal experiences, careers, interests, or backgrounds, and even wider subject matter, all of which makes for interesting listening. Each of these talks are videoed at present by member Mac Thompson, but previously by founder member Dennis Tidswell, and each is placed in the Archives and are available to any absent, present or new members.
