For the final week of the Pembroke and Pembroke Dock LVA Quiz League, all teams played, with the questions set by the quiz co-ordinator.
Although the Station B had retained their title, runners-up spot was still to be decided, with four teams still in with a chance of coming second.
The Martello Club held the advantage, but had to play the champions on their patch and what a game this turned into with the Station B taking a four-point lead in round one and when round two ended level, things were starting to get twitchy for the visitors. However, the head-to-head changed things and the Martello boys pinched a single point advantage going into the pictures, which again ended even. Round five saw the visitors increase their lead to four points, with it all down to round six, but despite Steve, Tom and Bob bagging big sixes, the Martello Club held their nerve, taking steady threes and snatched a pass-over to claim the game by a solitary point and runners-up spot.
At the Charlton, the A took on the Oak, with both having the chance to claim second had the Martello failed, but with half their side away, the home side did well to field a team. They put up a brave battle, but finally succumbed to the Oak's onslaught and the night's top score.
In the final game of the season for both teams, the First & Last entertained the Alma. The first round of individuals, recently in the news, was just what the F&L's wanted and they eased into a 16-14 lead. If Dean thought the Natural World was right up his street, his hopes became as extinct as the dodo in question four as the Alma turned the game round and pulled out a fine 27-22 lead. The head-to-head of round three threw up some interesting topics and the Alma stretched their lead to 42-42. The picture round showed celebrities in a different light and again the Alma pinched another papal point to stretch their lead to 60-48. With time running out for the F&L, the reign of Queen Elizabeth didn't help as the two teams shared the points, meaning the gap was 12 points going into the final round. Still possible for the F&L and with two individual questions bringing in 12 points it was a possibility. The Alma, though, held their nerve taking team points and even pinching some Parsley from the F&L to run out deserved winners 87-75 in a thoroughly enjoyable game.
Surprise of the night was once again at the St. Govan's Inn, who, after destroying the Charlton A three weeks ago, did a demolition job on the Charlton B, destroying any chance they had of runners-up.
In the final match of the round, another close result came from the Golf Club, who just squeezed home against the Station A by two points.
So the final week's results were: Station B 82 Martello Club 83; Charlton A 73 Oak 94; Golf Club 80 Station A 78; St. Govan's Inn 84 Charlton B 71 and First & Last 75 Alma 87.
The final league standings are: Station B 37 points, Martello Club 36, Oak 33, Charlton A 31, Charlton B 30, Golf Club 25, Station A and First & Last 24, Alma 16 and St Govan's Inn 12.
See you all next Sunday at the Station for the cup quiz and presentation.
