AS PART of their quest to support local performers, Calstock Arts are holding another event in their series of ‘Gallery Bar Specials’ on Friday, September 23.
These ‘Specials’ mean that entry is free and you give only what you can afford and what you feel the performers are worth.
On occasion these local artists challenge the more well known names in the quality of what they deliver.
All of these donations always go directly to the performers, which is always a very good cause.
Nick Wyke and Becki Driscoll are two of the West Country’s finest fiddlers. Together they have a stunning take on English traditional music and song.
They provide a melodic, emotive violin and viola blend with driving chords and powerful vocals to create a rich, captivating sound.
James Budden, who is no stranger to Calstock Arts, is a superb bass player across a range of genres.
Nick and Becki have worked and recorded with some of the leading folk musicians and currently perform in the Jim Causley Trio.
They first worked together as buskers around Spain and Portugal.
They said: “We are inspired by the people we meet and the places we’ve been. We like the idea of a global approach to the English tradition.”
They encompass the dark side of English ballads to light-hearted dance tunes interspersed with their own compositions and anecdotes. Their performances have been described as having a ‘passionate musicality and distinctive presence and a superb advert for English music.’
