Launceston and District U3A — The speaker at the recent coffee morning of Launceston and District U3A was Paul Newman. Having been a firefighter for 30 years in the London Fire Brigade, he is now a volunteer with the Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service.

He emphasised the need for fire safety measures in the home, especially for the 20% of Launceston’s population who are over 65. He explained that the Launceston fire station, staffed by on call firefighters, covers a larger area than any other such station in Cornwall.

The service offers a free Home Fire Safety Check which includes smoke alarms as needed.

The Launceston U3A meet at a coffee morning on the last Friday of every month except December, 10.15am at the hall at Launceston Central Methodist Church.
