THE sampling part of the genetic study of Bodmin Moor project is coming to an end but there are still a few more samples needing to be collected.

Jodie E Lampert, who is currently studying for her PhD at the University of Leicester, who has been running the study into the surnames of Bodmin Moor, said she will have some preliminary results of the Bodmin Moor Y-chromosome typed up on her website by Christmas.

The next step in the study will be to compare the results with Y-chromosomes from men in other parts of Cornwall and Devon.

Ms Lampert is making one last appeal to find any males with the following surnames whose paternal ancestors were born on the moor — Taprill, Goyens/Goyins, Tregloyne/Tregloin, Berdinner, Smitheram, Ferrit, Barnecut, Duence/Duens, Trevain, Clemings, Trehane, Burnaford, Polmeer, Honeycombe, Creeper, Gumbe.

Ms Lampert has said she is still interested in all the names listed on her website, but the names listed above are the ones that had the highest percentage in the moor parishes in 1881 so are of significant interest.

If any local males have these surnames they are asked to contact Ms Lampert by e-mailing [email protected] or visiting her webpage www2.le.ac.uk/departments/genetics/people/jobling/bodmin-moor-project
