TWO parrots were amongst items stolen from the Zoo Pet and Supplies shop on Newport Industrial Estate, Launceston, between 8.30pm on Wednesday, July 7 and 8am on Thursday, July 8.

One of the two unique birds, a Blue Macaw approximately 18 inches in height named Ricky, was rescued by shop owner Brian Cooper when the bird was just seven-months-old. The bird is now nine years and a much loved family pet.

Brian explained that both of the parrots were hand reared and as Ricky was a rescue bird he wouldn't "take to other people" and doesn't know how to fly, therefore Brian is concerned that he may have been "dumped somewhere."

Brian said customers have also been left upset as they would take food items in to give to Ricky.

The second stolen parrot, a Yellow Crowned Amazon, approximately 14 inches in height, is called Georgie and can sing 'Happy Birthday'.

A customer visited the shop the day after the break-in as they wanted him to sing 'Happy Birthday' for them, but they were saddened by the news.

It is believed entry was forced through a double glazed door and together the two parrots were valued at around £1,600, however, fish tanks, dog collars, pet food and a whole range of other supplies were also stolen bringing the total to around £5,000.

Brian said Ricky sat on a parrot perch and this was also stolen with the bird attached. The shop also encountered a small break-in earlier on in the year, when a window was smashed.

The police are continuing their investigation, together with a break-in at Bluewater Home Improvement Centre, Newport Industrial Estate, which occurred between 5.30pm on June 8 to 7.30am on June 9 in which 42 items were stolen from the warehouse, worth an estimated £17,975.
