THE first of a new monthly ‘drop-in’ session for those with Parkinson’s disease took place last Thursday.

Anyone who has Parkinson’s, is caring for someone with the disease or who would just like to know more, is welcome to attend for refreshments and a chat.

Group organiser Marian Humphries, who has had Parkinson’s for six years, said her aim was to bring something for sufferers and their carers to the Launceston area.

“Lots of things they have on are further down the county, so we’re trying to set up a group here so that more people can get to them. It’s just a bit of support, somewhere to go if you want a chat.”

Mrs Humphries said that often there are no leaflets about Parkinson’s in medical centres and doctors’ surgeries, leaving sufferers often wondering where to turn.

“People are almost left to their own devices if they don’t seek help, so this is a way for people who haven’t been brave to pop in to the group for a chat.”

The first meeting was supported by Sue Whipps, chair of the Mid Cornwall branch of Parkinson’s UK.

The meeting was well supported and it is hoped visits from nurses and speakers can be organised in the future.

“Some of the people there were already Parkinson’s friends of mine but they came to support me, and there were a couple of new people who came along. I was very pleased and I’ve had a couple of calls in response to the posters from other people who are interested.”

The group is held in Launceston Town Hall between 2pm and 4pm on the first Thursday of every month. For more information, contact Marian Humphries on 01566 785798.
