LAUNCESTON’S Lawrence House Museum will be used for a paranormal investigation next year.
Launceston Town Council, as trustee of the museum, was approached by an organisation looking to use the town as part of its business and aim to ‘make Launceston famous as a town to investigate the paranormal’, according to the paper put before councillors at their meeting on October 16.
According to the council’s paper, the organisation’s request is ‘based on the need to preserve and protect the history and especially historic buildings of the town’.
No other information was provided on the organisation or when it hopes to hold its investigation.
Mayor Cllr Margaret Young said: “It has been requested that we have paranormal happenings at Lawrence House Museum and we are looking for your approval to hire it to a company who want to use the building, who will pay quite grandly for the use of Lawrence House Museum.
“The TV show ‘Most Haunted’ is coming here in April and the Town Hall has been used for some of these happenings before. There’s quite a following.”
The Town Hall has a booking in April by Richard Felix of the TV Show ‘Most Haunted’.
Launceston town councillors were asked to consider if they wished to allow the hire of Lawrence House Museum as part of any events that may be proposed in the future.
Cllr John Conway quipped: “If there’s payment involved, how can I object!”
He continued: “In my opinion, this should be dealt with by the management committee of Lawrence House — we are the trustees but we have a management committee. This is a day to day running thing. I have no objection to it.”
Cllr Young clarified: “As trustees, we have to make the decision before the management committee.”
Cllr Jane Nancarrow said: “I think it could be a very good idea if it’s done very sensitively and they look after the fabric of the building.
“Some of our former mayors might be present in the proceedings!”
Cllr Paul O’Brien said of the idea: “It’s encouraging the use of the museum and any additional income it can produce ought to be good.”
The proposal for the museum to be used by the company for its paranormal investigation was carried by the town council, and Cllr Young said it will now be taken to the Lawrence House management committee.
