Launceston Town Council held its annual Christmas lights switch-on this weekend.

The event on Friday, December 3 went off without a hitch and was well received by the residents of Launceston. The lights were switched on by the winner of the competition to design this year’s Mayor’s Christmas Card — Lydia Gardener, aged seven.

Mayor of Launceston Cllr Leighton Penhale said: “After a disappointing Christmas last year, the town council decided this year it had to be special, I hope we succeeded.

“What a wonderful evening was had by all. The procession commenced in Church Street led by councillors in Victorian dress, followed by Santa on his sleigh, accompanied by the Mayor and Mayoress and followed by children carrying lanterns, with the Samba Band bringing up the rear end entering Westgate Street and onto the Square where we were met by a throng of bustling people all enjoying the atmosphere awaiting the festive lights to be switched on.

“This autumn, six schools entered a competition to design a Christmas card, the winner got the privilege of switching on the lights. There were 105 entries, all of a very high and interesting standard. The winner was Lydia Gardener, age seven, from St Catherine’s CofE Primary School.

“Rob Tremain introduced Lydia to the crowded town centre, she pressed the plunger and the lights came on, and a wonderful display was enjoyed by all. Santa was in his grotto giving presents to children.

“The Mayoress, Deputy Mayor and I then made our way to St Mary’s Church where I opened the Christmas Tree Festival which is a magnificent display. Across the street at Central Methodist Church a warm welcome was given to view the nativity scenes.

“Earlier in the day and the evening bringing our duties to a close we had the pleasure of judging the shop windows competition with Country Chic coming first, The Byre second and third Lowen Bridal. Congratulations, thank you all for taking part, all those who helped to make the evening such a wonderful joyous success.

“On behalf of the council the Mayoress and myself we wish you all a happy Christmas.”

Launceston Town Council would also like to thank SW Lakes Trust, Tinhay Building Supplies, M&M Plant, WT Scaffolding LTD, Tree Two One, Eagle Plant, More Creative, Launceston Lions, Oksigen Theatre, Launceston Town Band, PopChoir and Tim Coleman for donating their time, skills or equipment to enable the event to happen.
