THE St Giles Womens Guild recently held their Summer Fete in aid of the Children’s Hospice South West, their chosen charity for this year.

The fete was opened by Zoe Partridge, from the charity, who gave a short talk about the work the hospice does helping the children and their families.

She explained they provide respite, palliative and end of life care, as well as essential support for the whole family, who have to cope with the most difficult of situations.

They have three hospices in the area and each of them offer a home from home environment allowing children and families to forget their worries for a while, be together as a family and find expert help and support in facing the future.

She said the charity is almost reliant on voluntary income and therefore fundraising events, such as the fete, make a huge difference to the 400 plus families they are supporting at the moment.

She was then presented with a corsage by four-year-old Ned Boundy, a grandson of guild member Maxine Towl.

There were many different stalls selling groceries, lots of plants, bric-a-brac, books and wonderful cakes including some with an Australian theme, made by a members friend visiting from Australia.

There was also a tombola, a treasure hunt, a large raffle and afternoon tea was served with lots of delicious pastries and cakes.

The fete raised £630, which included some generous donations and money from a raffle at the new year lunch as well as the bring and buy sale held earlier in the year.

Everyone who attended the fete had a great time.

Guild secretary Trish Shanks said: “The afternoon was a huge success with lots of local people coming along to support the event. It is a fantastic amount to raise for such a worthwhile and much needed charity.

“A big thank you to all guild members, helpers and everyone who came along. It was a wonderful afternoon.”
