YEARS 4, 5 and 6 from Otterham CP School visited Newquay Aerohub on Monday, October 30, to experience the third test run of the Bloodhound SSC (Supersonic Car), which is hoped to be the fastest car in the world.
Buzzing, the students departed school at half-past nine, arriving at their destination after an hour’s journey and splitting into three equal groups.
With a sense of excitement, they ventured over to the large educational centre, which was full of fascinating hands-on activities and things to see, including a life-size model of the Bloodhound SSC.
Just after midday, the 3,000 primary and secondary pupils who were there, rushed over to the runway, where the impressive car would start its third test run.
Out of nowhere, the Bloodhound appeared, but didn’t seem to be travelling very fast initially. However, on its second test run, it thundered down the track at 183mph, not quite reaching its goal of 200mph, due to an unexpected issue with the engine.
After the dramatic test run, Andy Green (the driver) came to the stage and announced to the crowd: “It was a very good test run, even though there were a few small problems. These will of course be sorted out before the big day.”
The children of Otterham School were extremely fortunate to gain these tickets and feast their eyes on the Bloodhound SSC. It was a day that no-one will ever forget and Class One would like to take this opportunity to wish Andy Green and his team the best of luck when they head to Africa in an attempt to beat the current world land speed record, which was set by Andy back in 1997.
