THE land on which the allotments on Camelford are located is to be leased to the town council on a one-year rolling basis.
At the April 19, meeting of the council, mayor, Cllr Rob Rotchell explained that the lease on the allotment ground is up for renewal next year. The rent charged by the landowner is a single white rose, payable on St Piran’s Day.
Cllr Rotchell said he had preliminary discussions with the owner who is prepared to continue the lease on a rolling one-year basis.
“Her reservations are solely on the basis that she cannot crystal ball read.”
Cllr Rotchell said the worst-case scenario would be the termination of the lease after one year, but it will continue for the foreseeable future.
Cllr Andy Shaw said the council should take up the offer, adding: “I still believe it’s a great asset to the community. The new houses that are being constructed have little or no recreational space. It could be better utilised.”
He asked whether, if the land became available for purchase, if the council would be given first option, but Cllr Rotchell said he had not been given a mandate to ask that question.
Cllr Rotchell did state that one of the council’s Public Loans Board grant is coming up for expiry, so another investment could be possible, and would be something for the council to consider.
The town’s allotments have proven to be very popular, with no vacants plots currently available.
