IT IS a sure bet that there has been nothing like it ever before in St Julitta’s Church at Lanteglos by Camelford — an orchestra of talented young musicians and a brilliant 13-year-old soloist.
The only similarity with ancient times was the candlelit church and the amazing acoustics of the building.
The Penzance Youth String Orchestra has become nationally recognised ambassadors for the best of music making in Cornwall.
They have appeared in many prestigious venues around the country such as Birmingham Town Hall and the Royal Albert Hall under their conductor and mentor Tim Boulton.
The highlight of the concert was a performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons with the 13-year-old soloist Bilegtugs Lut (known as Bill).
Although born in Manchester, Bill is of Mongolian descent and learned to play the violin at the Mongolian Music Conservatoire. He has won numerous international prizes for his musical ability with the violin and has competed in Japan, China, Czechoslovakia and Russia.
The concert was an amazing musical experience. Members of the audience described it as ‘a triumph, inspirational and total marvellous’. No words can quite describe this most memorable event.
It was part of a planned series of musical events to highlight the church and its restoration with generous help from many sources including the Heritage Lottery and the National Churches Trust.
