CAMELFORD WI’s February meeting turned into an evening of nostalgia with a ‘visit’ to the Regal Cinema at Delabole.

They were taken on this journey by David Flower, who was the projectionist for six years in the 1950s, and were shown a roll of the actual film that was used at the time.

To set the atmosphere, they started with cinema-style popcorn. Members saw many photos taken by Mr Flower of cinemas in Delabole, Bude and Launceston and learned more about each one.

They are no longer around but in their heyday were very popular and the place to go on a Saturday night.

There was even one in Boscastle (now the National Trust Shop), which ran for a couple of years.

Delabole cinema burned down in the 1960s, ending an era.

At the end of the presentation they relived a bygone moment by all standing for a cinema recording of the National Anthem.

To complete the evening there was a guess the film star competition, pages taken from Photoplay magazines from 1951 and two ‘usherettes’ — WI members Diane Taylor and Rita Wright — served ice cream to the ladies.
