A GROUP of tourists from Germany and Austria visited Tintagel Castle at the weekend and were met by North Cornwall Conservative MP Scott Mann.

Although very blustery on Sunday, February 26, the group with Mr Mann ascended the ruins, or as far as they were allowed by English Heritage, because of the conditions.

An English Heritage representative gave a brief outline of the castle and some of its history and the visitors were very grateful for the information and the tour.

The tour was aimed at attracting and encouraging more international visitors to the iconic coastal landmark.

During the tour Mr Mann, who was joined by the Tintagel ward candidate for the Cornwall Council elections, Barry Jordan, highlighted why the county is so popular amongst holidaymakers.

Mr Mann said: “The travel industry representatives from Germany and Austria were really excited about what we can offer out international visitors and particularly enjoyed the legendary castle with its story of King Arthur.

“It seems particularly pertinent we should have chosen Tintagel Castle with the theme of this year’s English Tourism Week being ‘Year of Literary Heroes’.

“The visit was part of my commitment to promoting our wonderful area and finding ways of boosting out economy and supporting local businesses. With the current exchange rate of pound to euro I’m already expecting a lot more visitors from abroad to come to Cornwall this year.”

Mr Jordan said: “It was a great chance to champion Tintagel to our international guests and showcase all the wonderful things our county has to offer.

“Our visitors were impressed at the history of Tintagel Castle and I’m sure we will be welcoming many more guests from Germany and Austria as a result.”

The visitors from Germany and Austria left Tintagel en route to Newquay and were set to stay in Cornwall until Wednesday.
