CORNWALL Council officers have confirmed that there will be no central monies available for urgently needed crossings or other major highways works in Launceston.
The Launceston Road Safety Partnership conducted a survey which agreed four major schemes which need doing to make life safer for pedestrians in Launceston. Only one of these currently has any hope of being funded.
Launceston Councillor Alex Folkes says: "I have been told that re-phasing the traffic lights at Newport is likely to cost around £40,000 and a new crossing on Western Road would cost £60,000.
"However, the only funds available are ward councillors' local budgets of £8,000 each year and these are not yet guaranteed beyond this year.
"I have asked cabinet member for highways Graeme Hicks to come to Launceston to see for himself the difficulties and dangers facing pedestrians here and he has agreed."
