CONCERN has been raised by Camelford Town Council after members found out there was insufficient funding to employ a manager for the town's new Foyer Project for more than six hours per week.
At the meeting of the town council on Tuesday, September 15, Cllr Sue Elford, the council's Foyer representative, said she recently attended a meeting at the Foyer where she
discovered the news that the Camelford project had not received enough funding, and would not have a manager there full time.
Cllr Andy Shaw said that the project only received planning permission because the council was advised there would be a full time manager.
He said that the council should write to Cornwall Council highlighting its obligation to fund the
project correctly, especially after former county and
district councillors Mrs Janey Comber and Mr Bob Ellison worked so hard to secure the funding.
"Without having a
controller it's going to be a nightmare for the residents of Camelford."
Cllr Rob Rotchell reiterated that the council only agreed to the project because of the guarantee of a 24-hour manager, and said: "Six hours a week is rubbish."
"It's dreadful," added Cllr Bob Ireland.
Cllr Elford said it would appear that the Bude Foyer Project — which is not built yet — would be receiving adequate funding, but not Camelford.
After the meeting, Cllr Lush said: "Speaking on behalf of my town council, I have to say my council was lead to believe at the planning stage by North Cornwall District Council that the funding for the project had been secured and was in place for a full time manager to be appointed to the centre and the town council, amid fears and trepidation, went ahead on that basis and endorsed the plans.
"Now we have been told that it is not the position and only six hours of support per week is forthcoming due to lack of funding and their need to fill the black hole they find themselves in."
He added: "This present scenario therefore is totally unacceptable to my council and the people of Camelford who at that time had suffered from and endured weeks of youth vandalism and misbehaviour.
"On a personal note it seems to me at present that the powers to be at Cornwall Council are no better than the last incumbents at Truro who, as in other things pertaining to Camelford, continue to ignore us and keep letting us down badly."
