THE Nipper Stillwater Competition season began for the Bude Club with the Cornish at St Ives on January 24 when the 8-10 year olds competed for the Cornish titles; the 11-13 year olds competed in St Ives on January 31 and the season ended with the National Stillwater Competition at Millfield, Somerset on February 7.

Sadly, the National event coincided with the heavy snow falls and the Bude team took the decision not to travel. However, two brave Bude Nippers did take part; Ben Wilson competed in the individual events and scored points for Bude whilst his sister, Sophie (who wasn't well enough to compete on the day) checked out the competition for the Club for next year!

Nipper events have gained in popularity over recent years and the competitive events are now of a very high standard with more and more Nippers taking part each year, so Bude did well to finish the Cornish in 5th place, particularly bearing in mind that their own training pool has been closed since Christmas. Ten teams consisting of approx 500 Nippers in total took part, including Bude's 30-strong team. It was clearly apparent that all thoroughly enjoyed their day.

Points were awarded to the first 8 places in each event and medals to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd. The team brought home a total of 11 medals. Special thanks to Jayney Henwood, Mike Maynard and Mark Ward for organising the teams and to Jenny Whybrow for helping with the timekeeping on the 31st.
