LIBERAL Democrat leader Nick Clegg announced a plan to pay a £250 bonus to carers when he visited Talgarth.

Mr Clegg visited the Glanenig House care home and paid tribute to Britain's army of unpaid carers. He said: "They are the unsung heroes and heroines of our society, they put their own lives on hold and make sacrifices."

The proposal announced by Mr Clegg, who has been deputy prime minister in the coalition government with the Conservatives, would see those looking after family and friends for more than 35 hours a week paid an additional £250 on top of the existing carer's allowance.

He met with Brecon and Radnorshire Lib Dem duo, Welsh leader Kirsty Williams and Roger Williams - who is defending the seat at the May 7 general election.

Also on Thursday, April 23 defence secretary Michael Fallon visited Brecon and met Conservative candidate Chris Davies.

The visits come as both parties step up their campaigns locally. The Conservatives are pushing the message Brecon and Radnorshire is one of only 23 seats it needs to capture for an outright majority.

The Lib Dems are also reminding local voters they hold the key to a Tory majority and say they can ensure politics is focused on the centre ground.
