SWIMMERS at Camelford Stingers Amateur Swimming Club are confident that their new independence is going to yield championship success in the future.

The swimming club, which meets at the Camelford Leisure Centre, is for children and young people in the Camelford and surrounding areas. Members have the opportunity to train twice a week in the pool as well as doing circuit training in the gym.

Recently the club broke away from the outgoing North Cornwall District Council to run itself as an independent body. As a result the club has seen interest grow with membership numbers increasing.

Swimming coach, Wayne Jordan-Shilling, is pleased that the move to independence has been so successful.

"It was a bold step and we were the first of the clubs in North Cornwall to break away. However, we have a strong committee which took a strategic view of the situation. They thought it could only bring good opportunities for the future. As a result we have seen our membership increase by about 20 per cent over the last six months and the club is financially strong."

Mr Jordan-Shilling is very keen that the club provides a safe and caring environment for swimming training that is safe and orderly, includes everyone and is fun. He is confident that this approach with the strong management committee will lead to lots of success in the future.

"Parents of children that complete all their swimming grades are keen for them to continue swimming in a structured setting and that's what we can do for them. They come along to Stingers and then really start to enjoy their swimming not only for the competitive training but for the friends they make here. The result is that several of our members are now swimming at County level."

Camelford Stingers welcomes new members and swimmers and who have achieved all the grades of the ASA National Teaching Plan. Please call Wayne on 01840 213188 for further details.
