A REQUEST to hold a new year’s party in Launceston Town Hall has been turned down.
Launceston Town Council had been approached with regards to a hire of the hall for a New Year’s Eve party. Councillors were told at the recent meeting that this is the first request of this kind, and it was noted that whilst staff members stated they were available to work, it should be considered that there would be the possibility of disturbance to local residents.
Mayor of Launceston, Cllr Dave Gordon said he had reservations about the request, not necessarily about the party but about the residents living nearby.
Cllr Margaret Young also commented on the quality of life of the stewards, adding: “I think that’s quite a big ask when it’s a public holiday. People can have parties in their own houses.”
However, Cllr John Conway said the town hall has been a traditional venue for such parties, particularly now that the White Hart is temporarily closed and the nightclub is shut.
“We need somewhere people can get together, that is properly managed with proper door staff.”
Cllr Conway said any staff willing to work would be on triple pay, and he added: “The town hall is probably the only venue to have a decent Christmas and new year party.”
Cllr Sam Allen said she also had concerns with the request, but said if the decision was made for the party to be allowed, the council would need to speak to the CCTV operators and also the street pastors to help with any disruption in the town area.
But Cllr Rob Tremain said there were ‘very scant details on what the party is going to involve’.
Cllr Gordon said a decision needed to be made, but added: “As much as I would like people to have a New Year’s Eve party, I have concerns here.”
Cllr Harris asked: “Would it be OK if it wasn’t New Year’s Eve?” and Cllr Gordon replied: “Probably not.”
Cllr Helen Bailey said: “It’s difficult to vote on something when you don’t know the full facts of what they want to do.”
Cllr Conway proposed to agree to the New Year’s Eve party, on the proviso there was sufficient security staff and the bar closed no later than 12.30am.
But Cllr Nicola Gilbert asked when the stewards would be expected to clear up, New Year’s Day?
There was no seconder for the proposal.
A second proposal was made to reject the request. All apart from one councillor voted in favour and the proposal was carried.
