A FOREST whistleblower has revealed Gloucestershire Constabulary has enforced new rules which she claims goes against its diversity policies.
From last Thursday staff, whether they work on the beat or behind the scenes, are limited to how much jewellery they wear, all tattoos must be hidden, and no extreme hairstyles are allowed.
The Review reader, who didn't wish to be named, said: "These new rules completely go against what Gloucestershire Police advocate. A huge part of the gruelling recruitment process is focussing on diversity and accepting people's differences in terms of sexuality, appearance and disability.
"These new rules were handed down by the chief constable and it's fair to say that there has been a lot of uproar within the force – both those who work with the public and in the office.
"It completely suffocates our individuality, I feel the police are reverting back to their own traditional ways – they must keep up with the times.
"Most people would say so long as you're doing your job it doesn't matter what you look like but it appears the police think differently.
"It's such a shame as there are many people who are really good at their job who are considering leaving after years of service following this announcement."
A Gloucestershire Police spokesperson said: "Gloucestershire Constabulary places importance upon its officers and staff presenting a professional appearance and being smart. We consider it plays a significant part in maintaining and enhancing public confidence in policing.
"To reflect this, the Constabulary has recently introduced a new uniform policy which includes advice on facial hair, covering of tattoos etc. The policy is intended to provide guidance to managers and staff; it does not replace the need for discussion with the individuals concerned. This ensures that a common-sense approach is adopted."
