THE first three-day Launceston Steam and Vintage Rally —it was the 27th such event — on the new site at Five Lanes was a resounding success.
"The move certainly paid off, and the beautiful weather brought in massive crowds. There were record entries in all classes and with more space we were able to include new attractions such as the amazing Wall of Death," reports secretary Teresa Gillbard.
"We had more trade stands than we've ever had before, and an extended marquee full of crafts, models and collections."
The Old Cornwall display was very popular, especially the Victorian washing demonstration, with children being able to use equipment such as a mangle.
The old fashioned bread milling and baking was excellent, especially the end product — eaten with a chunk of cheese and a glass of local cider!
SHEARING
Large crowds gathered for the sheep shearing demonstrations where the men used various equipment including early hand clippers.
The Reg Cooper Memorial trophy, given each year to the best exhibit on the showground, was awarded to Mr Morley D Beard, Truro for his 1945 Case L A tractor.
The 50/50 draw winners were Saturday — 1, Crispin Earle £100; 2, Mrs Northey, £60; 3, Peter Self £33.50. Sunday— 1, John Fry £150; 2, Mr Harrison £100; 3, Tasha Wickett, £50. Monday —1, Clifford Knight, £130; 2, Stuart Parish £63.
"When the accounts are finalised we will be making donations to the Children's Hospice South West Precious Lives Appeal and the Cornwall Air Ambulance," added Teresa.
