LAUNCESTON Town Band has appointed its principal solo cornet player Ann Brown as its new musical director from July 1.

Ann learned to play with Bude Town Band but began helping Launceston regularly as a teenager in 1977 before transferring to Launceston in 1979 where the then MD, Nick Chadd, appointed her principal solo cornet, a position she has held ever since.

Ann has considerable conducting experience, having taken the junior band to contests with some success. She still takes the junior band and the learners group or training band.

She was appointed MD of Camelford Town Band when it reformed about 20 years ago and more recently has been MD of Liskeard Silver Band since 2014.

She is married to former military bandsman Steve, who plays the Eb bass, and is the mother of percussionist Gemma.

“I know that Ann is completely committed to Launceston Town Band and will put her heart and soul into the job,” said band chairman, Mike Warne.

“Since I started playing with the band in 1981 I have known Ann, originally as our principal solo cornet, then as engagements secretary and vice-chairman, as MD of the junior band and learners and latterly as organiser of the Wednesday lunches in the bandroom and I am sure that Ann will work hard to make a success of the job. Now we need to find a good principal solo cornet!”

Retiring MD Colin Gay will not be leaving the band but, at his own request, will revert to playing. “Colin has done an excellent job and I am sure that Ann will build on that,” added Mike.

Anybody wishing to join the band as a learner or as a more experienced player can contact Ann on 01566 86700 or Colin on 01288 321789.
