THE official opening of Launceston's new household waste and recycling centre (HWRC) took place on March 9, where Cornwall Council Cabinet Member Julian German cut the green ribbon and took the opportunity to encourage local residents to take advantage of the modern facility.
Cllr German said: "I am delighted to formally open this facility, which improves upon the previous centre through the provision of a better layout, clearer signs and the acceptance of a greater number of materials for recycling."
Cornwall Regional Manager at SITA UK Phil Rudin commented: "As winter comes to an end, many of us will be preparing to tackle our garden or embark upon a spring clean at home, so we want local residents to be aware of the new centre so that they can recycle as much as possible."
Additional materials accepted at the new site (over and above what was taken at the previous centre in Launceston), include wood, plastic bottles and rubble. During February, the first full month of operation, 11 tonnes of wood was accepted for recycling — not far off the weight of the new London Routemaster Bus!
