A MAJOR new science and technology block was officially opened at Holsworthy College on Tuesday.
The £785,000 scheme provides a purpose-built new block which replaces the four existing science laboratories and the small, outdated design and technology rooms.
The new building has been named after the late Holsworthy County Councillor, Des Shadrick.
Holsworthy Principal, David Fitzsimmons said: "We wished to show our appreciation of the hard work, support and guidance which Des Shadrick gave us that helped considerably in taking this idea to fruition."
The development was officially opened by the Chairman of Devon County Council, John Berry and Mrs Marjorie Shadrick.
Mr Fitzsimmons added: "The old areas were certainly not inspiring for the next generation of scientists, designers and technologists, which is what we strive for as a Specialist Technology College. Now we can encourage active and independent learning through practical experiments, designing and manufacturing for all students in every lesson.
"This will help the students learn and develop their own interests and understanding, together with the skills they need to take their skills further. I want to pay tribute to the college governors who have provided excellent support for this major project."
Adam Symons, neighbouring councillor for Bradworthy and Hartland, said the block would be a "lasting tribute" to Des, who fought to make sure Holsworthy Community College got the support for the much needed facilities.
Speaking at the opening, Adam said: "Des fought tooth and nail to get the funding for this block. Even when he was desperately ill with cancer, it was a project which he strove to complete. I worked with Des to encourage Devon County Council to provide funding for it, and its completion is a lasting tribute to him."
