TRADING at the South West's newest livestock market commenced at Holsworthy Agribusiness Centre last week — witnessed by thousands of farmers, traders and visitors. More than ten years after plans for a new market were raised, the £7-million centre was a hive of activity for the first dairy sale on Wednesday, September 3. Car parks were full and the centre concourse brimming with business, while supporters strolled around the 40-acre site in warm September sun. A total of 3,400 animals — cows and sheep — were sold, including 18 dairy cattle from Belgium, at a 'wonderful' first day said Kivells. Peter Kivell, former director and auctioneer, auctioned the first store cattle of the day — a trio of bullocks bought by Derek Broad, of Homeleigh Garden Centre, for £1,175 each. Mr Kivell said: "We knew today would be a bit of an attraction and we are very pleased. It's come well up to expectations. It had to happen else the market would have had to close down. It was a no-brainer." For the full report, and a round-up of the area news and sport, see this week's edition of the Post.
