A NEW book in the ‘Kids of Kernow’ series is out now and it’s story is based in Bude.
Author Laraine Turner, who writes under the name Lally A Turner, of Launcells, published her first book in the series ‘Magical Mossy in Boscastle’ in early July, which later went on to win a prestigious award.
The second in the series ‘Mossy Casts A Spell In Bude’ was published in October and has been warmly received already.
Both books are charming and beautifully illustrated by Andy Templar and are sure to appeal to children, and adults with a fondness for their local area — especially as a percentage of the profits from each book will be donated to a local charity.
Explaining what drove her to create these locally inspired books, Laraine told the Post: “I moved to North Cornwall with the desire to continue my work, as a behavioural therapist for primary school children, but in a slightly different way.
“I wanted to reach out to more children than a limited caseload would allow whilst still allowing me time to explore the land I had longed to live in, for so long!
“Writing empowering stories, using all the techniques I had acquired (heavily disguised as Kernow magic) seemed like a good idea.
“In my first book ‘Magical Mossy in Boscastle’, I set out to enable and enchant the reader into understanding how they can change their own thoughts and emotions in order to help themselves. Indeed, my character Mossy does just that. Whilst celebrating World Kindness Day, she guides Oli, a young boy, to overcome his fear of crowds.”
Laraine said winning an award for her first book was just the incentive she needed to continue the series.
She said: “Winning this award has spurred me on to publish book two Mossy Casts A Spell In Bude. This time, Kernow magic helps Lucy to feel confident enough to start her new school and attempt learning to spell, in a new, fun way.”
As this book is set around Bude Sea Pool Laraine has kindly agreed to give a percentage of the profits from each book sold to the Friends of Bude Sea Pool (FoBSP) charity.
Now available to buy for £5.99 from Spencer Thorn Book shop, The Crescent Post Office and The Castle & Dragonfly Craft shop in Bude.
Laraine added: “My books do come with a warning, though. They may seriously raise your child’s self-esteem!”
