BRECON'S Nepalese community is on course to raise £10,000 towards victims of the earthquake which struck their homeland.
A street collection in the town centre on Saturday, May 2 raised £5,000 towards the Brecon Nepalese community's appeal.
Harising Gurung, the chairman of Brecon's Nepalese Society, said Nepalese families living locally were grateful for the support their appeal has received from the public and civic bodies in the town.
The 46-year-old said as well as the bucket collection on Saturday, which raised £5,154.55 the fund has been boosted by £3,471.60 collected by Morrison's at the tills at its supermarket in Brecon. Southern Vauxhall also held a coffee morning to raise funds for the appeal.
A candlelight vigil also took place at Brecon Cathedral on Sunday night.
Collection points at Brecon Beacons National Park, Brecon High School, Brecon's NPTC College, Llanfaes Church Hall and Bishop Bevan Hall were overwhelmed with donations with some places having to stop taking items in because they simply didn't have the room.
