May I take issue with the unnamed writer of a letter in the 'Post' (October 23) 'Amazed by intolerance at Tesco'.

The writer is obviously unaware that the need for special parking is caused not so much by the need to be near the store entrance (although that helps people with disabilities), but by the fact that regular spaces do not allow the car door to be opened wide enough to get a child and/or its seat in and out of the car.

Similarly, people with disabilities often suffer from the same problem in a regular space. I can speak from experience in both situations.

Incidentally, there are more than five disabled spaces at Tesco — to my recollection there are at least seventeen, in three rows.
