IT is not the policy of Launceston Town Council to name roads after people, members heard at its meeting on Tuesday.

The topic was discussed after resident Kevin Wadland sent a letter to the council, asking that a road be named after the late Graham Facks-Martin, when the opportunity arises.

Mr Facks-Martin had been a Launceston Town Councillor until his death last month.

Cllr Brian Keighley said: “There have been a lot of other good councillors who have not had roads named after then and if we do this it will set a precedent and might upset a family on the way.”

Referring to Cllr Facks-Martin’s ‘40 years of public service’, mayor Cllr Brian Hogan said: “Graham did go above and beyond. It’s his other many roles that elevate him even higher.”

Cllr Rob Tremain said: “It’s been a policy of this council that streets aren’t named after persons. There was an exception made for our poet, Charles Causley.

“I suggest we note his letter and when suggestions come forward at planning meetings as they do it will be discussed.”

Cllr John Harris said: “I actually think Graham would probably have not wanted it.”
