The Lawrence House Museum, in Launceston has had to join many across the country in lockdown, but is committed to giving people a daily dose of local history.
Despite having to close their doors, the museum’s publicity officer, Cherry Warne, has been busy posting a new object from the museum’s collection on their website and social media.
A new post is added everyday so that people can have a virtual tour of the house, garden and collection from the comfort of their own homes.
As Cherry has plenty of pictures on file she felt it would bring joy to people as well as give her a purpose during this lockdown period. She explained: “I have been the museum’s volunteer publicity officer since 2009 and over the years I have built up quite a collection of photographs of objects from the museum’s collection on my home computer.
“I decided it would do me good to give my day a bit of structure during lockdown and so started a rather static virtual tour of the museum by posting a new object from each room and then the garden in the morning each day.”
Now that Cherry has completed a tour she has decided to upload an individual item each day. She continued: “Having completed one tour, I am now posting interesting items which have featured in displays in the inner hall display case to show the breadth of the museum’s collections.
“I then intend to go for another virtual walk round the museum as I have so much lovely material.”
So far Cherry has had a welcomed response to her idea. She added: “I have had some really positive feedback from people who have seen my posts, so what started as a rather selfish action on my part is now bringing pleasure to all sorts of people.”
The museum Facebook page has all the posts preserved so people can look back at all the objects posted so far. Cherry hopes that parents might find it useful as a daily discovery or, perhaps, starting point for activities for bored children and adults alike, as well as reminding Launceston of the treasure it has in its midst.
