THE Museum of Witchcraft and Magic in Boscastle hosted its first ever Straw Crafts Day on Saturday.
The event was held in the National Trust Visitor Centre, which is located just next door to the museum and was led by artist Gillian Nott. A total of eight people attended.
The day started with learning how to tie appropriate knots but things swiftly developed from there and at the end of the day everyone left with a bundleful of beautifully crafted straw work.
Among the pieces made were a ‘Cornish neck’, held by Gillian in one of the photos. The special Cornish Neck differs greatly to her other corn dollies. The original design came from Ruan Minor in Cornwall, and at harvest time, people still continue the ancient ceremony of ‘Crying the Neck.’
Other similar events are being planned.
Museum manager Judith Hewitt said: “It was lovely to hold a day with links to the seasons and to do the craftwork that people may forget is part of witch-craft! Using a natural material and considering the symbolism of it to people past and present was a joyful way to welcome the autumn. People were thrilled to learn from Gillian who is a patient and skilful teacher with 40 years of experience in straw crafting.”
