FOLLOWING the news that Lloyds bank in Holsworthy is to close and the revelation that it was James Cole who laid the foundation stone of the purpose built building, a reader got in touch to say she was in possession of an artefact of significance.
Sue Worthington, who previously worked for Lloyds for 38 years, said: “I have actually got the original trowel that was presented to Mr Cole by the Bible Christian Chapel on April 17, 1876, when he laid the foundation stone.”
Sue found the trowel whilst clearing out her aunt and uncle’s premises: “I have had it for a long time. My aunt and uncle ran The Kings Arms in town. I had the job of clearing out their things when I found the trowel.
“It is a lovely article, it is quite ornate and is about 145 years old.”
On Thursday, July 8, Sue presented the trowel to the museum’s team, who were grateful to add this piece to their collection.
Liz Curtis, trustee of Holsworthy Museum, said: “Holsworthy Museum was delighted to receive the trowel that was used to lay the foundation stone of the Bible Christian Chapel in 1876 from Sue.
“It was quite a surprise when she told us of its existence. It can be seen in the museum from this week.”
