On Friday, May 1, the staff and residents of Burdon Grange Care Home in Highampton held a 'Cake Break Day.' Nationally this year's Cake Break was supported by celebrity chefs the 'Hairy Bikers' who urged people everywhere to indulge in a 'sweet treat' in aid of Multiple Sclerosis. The MS Society, which helps some 85,000 people in the UK affected by this devastating disease, relies on donations from individuals and groups to help them continue their good work. A number of local people who suffer from the disease and their family and friends attended the event which raised £200.00 for the local MS branch fund. The cake day celebration at Burdon Grange was instigated by Maurice Rayner, whose wife Carolyn, lives at the care home which provides pro-active nursing care for people with physical disabilities aged 18-65. Sadly, Maurice died suddenly in April and this event continued as a tribute to his memory. Ron Sillifant and his wife Eileen, welfare support officers for the North Cornwall and West Devon branch of the MS Society and who joined everyone on the day, kindly agreed to accept the cheque from Carolyn and Susan White. Both ladies are residents of the care home and have lived with MS for many years.
